This Kenyan woman faces deportation from Sweden after reportedly failing interviews to ascertain whether or not she is genuinely a lesbian
. According to reports, 28-year-old Lucy Murugi came out openly as a lesbian about two years ago. However, her family rejected her. Given the anti-gay laws in Kenya which meant she faced imprisonment of up to 14 years, she sought asylum in Sweden.
However, it appears that the Swedish Migration Board was not fully convinced that she is a lesbian and rejected her asylum application. In an interview, Lucy said she did not know what to expect in the interviews and thus barely understood anything, leading to her failure.
She claimed that her safety is not assured should she be deported back to Kenya, noting that she was publicly identified as gay by a Ugandan publication. She therefore hopes to get a second chance in Sweden .
